In light of ongoing attacks on Asian Americans in the Bay Area, the NLG-SFBA is preparing to offer a teach-in on the right to community defense, to self-defense and to resist. We recognize that these individual acts of racist violence are inextricable from the state violence that our communities face. As the legal arm of the movement, we at the NLG look to movement partners, activists, organizers, and community members for ways to support safety and self-defense at a community level, not just an individual level. (Please stay tuned for more information about this teach-in.) In light of the 73rd anniversary of the Nakba, we also uplift and support the right to resist and to community self-defense and self-determination both at home and abroad. We support Palestinian resistance in all forms against ongoing Israeli colonization, ethnic cleansing and genocide, and uplift the pressing #SaveSheikhJarrah eviction defense efforts in Jerusalem. “What we are witnessing in Sheikh Jarrah is Israel's attempt to erase the Palestinian presence from our native city in real time,” says Mohammed El-Kurd, whose family is among those set to be forcefully evicted in May. “This fate of dispossession looms over much of my neighborhood. Our lives are consumed by the anxiety of living on the brink of homelessness.”
We encourage community members in the Bay Area to show up in solidarity with the Palestinian people at the Nakba 73 mural painting and rally this Saturday. (See below for more information). After a strong kickoff of our Root Causes of Forced Migration Series last Tuesday, we look ahead to the second panel on May 26, on Climate Change, Food Production, & Environmental Disaster. In lieu of our May membership meeting, we encourage all members to attend this panel and the rest of the webinar series, Gender-Based Violence and Justice. We hope to see many of you there! (See below for registration information.) We wish all a Happy Eid & Eid Mubarak to all who celebrate, and continue to strengthen our commitments to dismantling white supremacy, state violence, and empire, both at home and abroad. —The NLG-SF Bay Area Team |
